Easy Healthier & Cheaper Ranch Dressing Mix/Dressing

Wanted to make a healthier ranch dressing mix that I could have in my cupboard for a multitude of uses. Super easy to put together, customize and store for making batches of dressing when needed. Can also season veggies, meat, sauces or a keto breading.

Speaking price, ingredients and carbs, it cost me about $.55 per 1oz. which is the amount that is in a hidden valley packet that is used to make a batch of ranch dressing. The hidden valley ranch packet costs about $1.69 at my Walmart and the first two ingredients are Maltodextrin which is a carb and buttermilk powder which has carbs. Even though the back of the package says it is 0 carbs per portion, the portion is only 1/4 tsp. so there are carbs you are consuming without knowing. If you make a batch of ranch dressing there is 1-2, 1/4tsp. portions in each tablespoon you are eating, which isn't very much dressing.

Making your own ranch seasoning packet mix is super simple the only specialty ingredients are heavy cream powder (in place of buttermilk powder) and xanthan gum, which is in a regular packet mix along with guar gum. The rest is just seasoning and my spice blend is perfect to use in the applications mentioned above. If making dressing the seasonings are really to taste for whatever ranch dressing you prefer like garlic ranch, peppercorn ranch or even can make a parmesan ranch by just adding some different ingredients when making your batch of dressing.

Heavy Cream Powder I buy cause it's cheaper per ounce but any brand will do- https://amzn.to/3YXZV44

Anthony's Xanthan Gum (most xanthan gums have different gelling power)- https://amzn.to/44rhPjz

Ranch Seasoning Mix (can cut in half)

4oz./1 Cup Heavy Cream Powder

1 tsp. Xanthan Gum

2 Tbs. Granulated Onion

2 Tbs. Granulated Garlic

1 Tbs. + 1/2 tsp. Dried Dill

2 +1/2 tsp. Redman's Real Salt (I find it less salty than most so if using something different you may want to start with less)

2 tsp. Black Pepper

1/2 Tbs. Parsley (optional)

1 Tbs. Dried Chive (optional) Can also just add fresh when making dressing

Instructions:

  1. Combine all ingredients in a container and mix well, store in an airtight container in cupboard or other cool, dry place

  2. Use about 4 Tbs. or 1 oz. to make a batch of dressing like on the back of a regular ranch packet, recipe makes about 6oz.

When making the ranch dressing you can control the ingredients. I made my own low carb buttermilk with vinegar, heavy cream and water and used chosen foods mayo. You can use a different low carb milk but not all of them may taste as good in savory applications. I tried unsweetened macadamia nut milk and it tasted strange, so much so that I kept checking if it was vanilla flavored. So definitely use a very neutral tasting low carb milk if that is what you chose. The heavy cream and water makes an easy whole milk with just a few carbs. Adding vinegar gives that dressing flavor you need for ranch dressing. You can also use lemon juice to make the buttermilk but I don't prefer that flavor in ranch dressing, why I don't like the primal kitchen ranch dressing.

Because I didn't like any of the low carb versions in stores I was still eating my favorite Ranch dressing, Ken's Buttermilk Ranch. So I made this recipe literally tasting Ken's ranch dressing against the homemade version and tweaked it to taste as similar as possible to my favorite. You can do the same, this mix is very customizable to what kind of ranch dressing you prefer!

Ranch Dressing

1 Cup Avocado Oil Mayo

1 oz. Dry Ranch mix

1 Cup Low Carb Buttermilk- 1/3 Cup Heavy Cream + 1 Tbs. Vinegar (to taste), fill to 1 Cup/8oz. with Water (or use other low carb unsweetened milk)

8 drops liquid stevia (optional, to taste) (any sweeter you like but add a little at a time)

Instructions:

  1. Measure out mayo into a vessel to whisk, add the ranch mix then a splash of the "buttermilk"

  2. Whisk until well combined and thick, with no powder clumps

  3. Continue adding the milk a little at a time and whisking well until all the milk is combined into the mayo and ranch mix

  4. Taste and sweeten a bit if desired, place in a tight sealing container and refrigerate for a few hours before serving to thicken and develop flavors
